Medway Branch News

Chairman: Maj (Retd) Derek Duchemin

Following his six years chairmanship of the branch, Maj (Retd) Reg Cross called for a volunteer to take over at our meeting in September and in the absence of any one else I offered to take on the task. I have been helped by Reg in this and thank him for his support and also for the six years of chairmanship given to the branch. Although the name of the branch signifies a somewhat more limited area, it does take in the whole of Kent and includes members from London and Sussex who choose to attend our functions.

The wide catchment area makes for difficulties in arranging frequent meetings and the branch has for the last few years successfully met on two occasions in the year. We met at Detling for our lunch in September and, for the meeting in April, I was able to arrange a visit to the oldest brewery in Kent, Shepherd Neame in Faversham which has stood on the same site since 1698.

There was a very good attendance for the visit with 29 members and guests signed up for the trip. We were blessed with a very pleasant Spring day and a well organised tour and lunch at the brewery. The trip included a tutored tasting of a number of their products where those with a nose for it could conjure up hints of fruits and other substances in the aroma and taste of the individual beers. The party learned that the well known, in Kent at least, Spitfire brew had originally only been produced for the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and expected to sell for only three months. It has been so successful that it has continued and is the best selling of the keg beers!

After the tour the party enjoyed a Brewer’s Platter and the chance to meet and chat to old acquaintances; we were pleased to have the company of some members who were on their maiden branch visit and do hope that they will take the opportunity to attend future functions.

The next meeting will follow our usual pattern and is expected to be a lunch at the Cock Inn, Detling in September, details to be sent to members when arrangements have been finalised.
