RAPC GOLF SOCIETY AUTUMN  MEETING

NORTH V SOUTH

FRIDAY 6 OCTOBER 2006

After many years of focusing the Spring and Autumn Corps meetings in the South of England, October 2006 saw the migration of the southern forces to Ripon City Golf Club in Yorkshire, to take on our Northern brethren.  It has always been a difficult task to change the venues and attempts in previous years have had limited success. Whether there are more retired members now living in the North or whether the advance in technology to communicate by email has helped, I am not sure.   But one thing is certain - the men from the South went home defeated by a strong and full strength Northern Team!

Dave Franklin and Phil Glendinning were enthusiastic helpers from the North and Peter Bamforth, Malcolm Kerridge and Leyman Leighton provided some additional and welcome sponsorship.

The Secretary had arranged local hostelry accommodation for the Thursday and Friday nights.   The accommodation was reasonably acceptable, configured in a stable courtyard; but the pub that was attached to the accommodation was described as out of East Enders on a bad Friday night, although to be fair – there were no fights, and the breakfasts were substantial.   A great Indian Curry House (bring your own alcohol) was the venue for Thursday night.   Therefore 9 bottles of red wine were duly purchased and provided by Phil Kellett.

Arrangements for the Friday included coffee on arrival, soup & sandwich lunch, and a 2 course evening meal.   The format of the golf for the day was an 18 holes Individual Medal and concurrent Stableford in the morning and 18 holes Greensomes in the afternoon (partners drawn at lunch).

21 players took to the course, a 6084 yard 18 hole par 70, which was in fine fettle.  The original nine holes were created on undulating parkland with several deep depressions known locally as bombholes! Reputedly the venue for cockfighting and a campsite for tinkers. (Whether the cockfighting had anything to do with the Southern team losing most of their balls on the front nine is debatable.)

The Medal Scratch was a tight affair with Martin Abbott out in 37, Peter Bamforth on 38 and five more on 39 including Leyman Leighton.  A solid 43 from Peter was not enough to beat off Leyman who carded a gross 81 to beat Peter on a countback.

A sound handicap display saw Gus Walker take the Stableford prize with 37 points from Keith Tonge on 36.    The Longest Drive was won by Colin Withey, with John Stephenson taking Nearest the Pin.   Jeff Law had an adventurous day and won a View Finder.

The Afternoon Greensomes, paired Peter Bamforth with Keith Tonge who destroyed the field with 42 points, Ian Sketchley and Adam (a sub) coming in second with 39 points.

A grand supper was enjoyed by all with considerable banter and then the Captain made the final presentation - the Team Trophy.  It was based on the best 8 Stableford cards from the North and South from the morning round, with a resounding victory to the North by 282 to 258 points, the Trophy, honourably accepted by Dave Franklin.  Finally thanks were proposed and resoundingly supported for the Club and staff who were extremely helpful and went out of their way to make the day a success for us all.  It was agreed that the Trophy would be played for bi-annually, in the North, giving the South chance to recover.   But the night was not over yet….. All those from the North, who could, followed the Southern team back to their accommodation and helped guide them round some of the diverse hostelries of Ripon.
